DCC Sponsor Spotlight: Alexander Global Village

Friendsgiving at the Global Village

The Developing Cultural Competence certificate program is a co-curricular opportunity for NC State students to connect with students enrolled in our partner institutions around the globe. During the Fall 2024 semester, a cohort of NC State students who participate in daily intercultural exchange and global learning were sponsored to participate in an effort to deepen their cultural understanding: residents and student leaders in the Global Living and Learning Village community. Global Village is a housing initiative at NC State that facilitates experiential cultural learning.

When informed about the goals and activities of GTI’s Developing Cultural Competence (DCC) program, Global Village Director Alejandra Orellana-Portillo saw the opportunity to connect residential experience to global learning outcomes. During Fall 2024, Global Village sponsored participation for ten residents, including their student staff. Attending DCC served as an opportunity for professional development, encouraged the GV students to understand the theory and framework of cultural competence development while they were not only experiencing it, but also facilitating it for others through residential programming.

“The things I learned in the DCC program such as being more open-minded to other cultures helped me to understand people in this village better and form better relationships with them.”

Global Village will continue to sponsor interested residents to complete GTI’s co-curricular global learning certificate in Spring 2025. Spring sessions meet weekly in February, and summer sessions are planned for July 2025.
