NC State Global To Launch Campus-Wide Programming Initiative around UN Sustainable Development Goals This Fall
Beginning in the Fall of 2021, the Office of Global Engagement will launch a campus-wide collaborative programming effort focused around the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The programming plan is part of the Office of Global Engagement’s strategic framework entitled “Global Learning For All.”
This SDG initiative, scheduled to last through the 2021-22 and 2022-23 academic years, will feature a wide array of programs and events that will focus on a cluster of goals each semester. Its purpose is multifold: To help students, faculty, and staff gain a better understanding of the SDGs and their importance in a global context; to highlight NC State’s contribution to addressing these critical issues; and to develop and expand local and global partnerships with individuals, organizations and other universities moving forward. This effort will clarify why the SDGs are a blueprint for peace and prosperity in the world and will promote engagement in support of the goals.
The first cluster, Quality of Life, will highlight the SDGs of No Poverty (goal #1), Zero Hunger (goal #2), Good Health and Well Being (goal #3), and Clean Water and Sanitation (goal #6). Alumni and friends working to address these, and any of the 16 primary SDGs, are invited to share their efforts and interest in collaborating with the Office of Global Engagement on these initiatives. Why are the SDGs important?
NC State University is an official signatory of the University Global Coalition and has committed to the goal of “increasing students’ understanding of the most pressing challenges facing the world today as articulated in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and inspiring students to play an active role in driving change and finding new solutions.”
“The participation of our alumni network in SDG efforts will help equip students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to make changes that will protect the world for themselves and future generations,” said David Hawley, Manager of Global Programming in the Office of Global Engagement. “In addition, this programming provides a unique opportunity for alumni to connect with faculty, staff and students around a critical piece of the university’s strategic plan.”
