More than 900 free tickets were “sold” for the first ever Tournées Film Festival at NC State University. The Global Training Initiative partnered with the Union Activities Board Films Committee, NC State Libraries, and SKEMA Business School to present six highly acclaimed contemporary and classic films. The screenings were all free and open to the public and included introductions by esteemed NC State faculty from the College of Design and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The audience for each of the films were diverse, with about half the group comprised of NC State students and the other half were university employees and members of the community. University Student Centers helped sponsor free popcorn at each of the Thursday screenings. And, local organizations, such as Meredith College’s MBA and Foreign Languages and Literature programs, the Alliance Francaise of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, L’Ecole – the French school of Raleigh, Raleigh Sister Cities, and local individuals also helped sponsor the film festival.
Tournées Film Festival is a program of the FACE Foundation, in partnership with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, which aims to bring French cinema to American college and university campuses. Showcasing established and emerging talents, the festival reflects the diversity and the richness of French cinema through various genres — fiction, documentary, animation and repertory films — giving participants the opportunity to expand their programming and for audiences to experience French cinema through a wider lens.
Alexandre Durand, the Cultural Attaché from the Consulate General of France, helped launch and promote the festival in January with an In-Depth segment recorded with Time Warner Cable News. NC State’s Technician also featured articles and advertisements for the festival. Local media outlets, like the News & Observer and WRAL.com also highlighted the film festival.
Thanks to everyone who helped make this first film festival a success. We look forward to seeing you all next year!
