Numerous international students come to North Carolina State University through the Global Training Initiative (GTI) each year. Students from partner institutions in Asia participate in an accelerated master’s degree program (3+X). The GTI also administers the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program (BSMP) on campus. In addition, there is also an undergraduate certificate program (GTE/GTC) offered to interested international students who study at NC State for one semester, or more in special cases.
The GTI offers a 400-level course (GTI 401 U.S. Culture and Higher Education Colloquium) in the fall of each academic year as a requirement for all students participating in the 3+X, BSMP, and GTE/GTC certificate programs. The students who come to NC State through these programs also take other courses during the semesters they are considered GTI non-degree seeking (NDS) students. All tuition and fees from this course as well as the other courses and credits that these students enroll in are absorbed by the University, thus each dollar of tuition paid is a direct impact and benefit to NC State.
The total amount of tuition contributions paid by the 3+X, BSMP, and GTE/GTC certificate students while they are classified as the GTI’s non-degree seeking students from August 2007 through May 2014 is $3,439,448 and the total amount of student fee contributions by the same group is $346,131.
For the 3+X students, most of them continue in their graduate program after their initial semester as a GTI student. Several 3+X program graduates have also continued in a doctoral program at NC State or other universities once they’ve successfully completed their master’s program. A few outstanding GTE students also continue at NC State in a graduate degree program.
The GTI, along with the Poole College of Management, partners with the Raleigh Campus of SKEMA Business School to integrate their students into the campus at NC State. The GTI oversees numerous aspects of SKEMA students’ transition to study at their US campus at NC State University, before and after they arrive, and is directly responsible for ensuring that students are put into the university’s student information system and become fully admitted NDS students at NC State. NC State does not receive tuition from these students, but the University does collect student fees.
The total amount of tuition contributions for all courses taken by students who were initially involved in the 3+X, BSMP, and GTE/GTC certificate programs between August 2007 and May 2014 is $9,997,013.50.
The total amount of student fee contributions by students who were initially involved in the 3+X, BSMP, SKEMA, and undergraduate certificate programs between August 2007 and May 2014 is $2,691,586.12.
Total Tuition Contributions by Program
(August 2007 to May 2014):
|Brazilian Scientific Mobility Program (BSMP)||$718,697.50|
|GTE/GTC Certificate Program||$574,783.00|
Total Student Fee Contributions by Program
(August 2007 to May 2014):

Total tuition contributions were calculated by reviewing transcript records of all past and current GTI students in the 3+X, BSMP, and GTE/GTC certificate programs. Total fee contributions were calculated by reviewing transcript records of all past and current GTI students for which the GTI directly manages the student integration process (3+X, BSMP, undegraduate certificate programs, SKEMA). The GTI used NC State published Tuition and Fees numbers to calculate total tuition and fee contribution to the University.
